Overview
The Hive Inclusive Community, a Tampa-based nonprofit dedicated to fostering inclusive communities among adults living with disabilities, hosted its “Beauty of Inclusion Fashion Show” in June 2023. I had the unique opportunity to work with Hive in bringing their first major fundraiser to life and ensure a smooth auditory experience for all involved.
The Beauty of Inclusion event, hosted at the 1920 Ybor in Ybor City, highlighted Hive’s community members in a hybrid fashion show/fundraiser format, gathering local leaders and fashion authorities in a showcase of distinct looks from local designers — including autistic fashion designer Aarushi Pratap, a newcomer to the fashion community. Runway attire was divided into three themes: A 70s-inspired line by Dorothy Zudora, sustainable line from Valhala Clothing Store, and Tampa-inspired line from Pratap.
As DJ of the fashion show, I worked with founder Tonya Whitlock to curate each designer’s auditory vision for their fashion line.
Valhala Clothing Store’s “Summertime” theme incorporated a mix of upbeat pop and various summer hits (i.e. Will Smith, Dua Lipa, Beyoncé, Calvin Harris, etc.)
- Dorothy Zudora’s 70s “Retro” theme mixed classic disco and funk favorites (i.e. Michael Jackson, Weeks & Company, Cheryl Lynn, etc.)
- Aarushi Pratap’s stark, dominant fashion line paired with a complementary “dark pop” soundtrack fitting of the attire (i.e. Phantogram, The Weeknd, Metro Boomin’, etc.)
The day of the event went off without a hitch to resounding success, including positive feedback from Whitlock, members of the Hive Community, and fellow attendees. I want to give a special thank you to Tonya and the rest of the Hive Inclusive Community for allowing me to take part in such an important and impactful affect to help showcase the power of the community.
